A native Floridian, I began my pursuit of photography while a student at
Florida State University, where I was a fine arts major, studying advertising
design. At FSU, I provided photojournalism services to the campus newspaper and
yearbook.
Later, as a combat photographer for the US
Navy, I had a variety of military assignments in the United States and Europe
during the Viet Nam era. I located in Orlando following my discharge and
explored the emerging multi-media, audio visual production business. I
ultimately opened my own studio, garnering Addy Awards in photography and
multi-image along the way. The multi-image industry, based exclusively on 35mm
film, saw its popularity climax in the late 70’s to mid-80’s, then vanish with
the advent of digital presentation software, such as
Powerpoint.
Today, I shoot large format film for
personal assignments. One such current assignment is to publish a collection of
photos showcasing Florida’s rives of the Big Bend area. Most all rivers of this
region start in underground sinks or springs and meander south to the Gulf
through picturesque countryside. The most well-known of course, is the Suwannee,
however, The St. Marks, The Apalachicola, and the Withalachoochee all play a
role in Florida’s rich history.
Photography in large
format is not easy and is becoming less and less popular as access to large
format equipment and materials becomes more difficult in the shadow of the
digital world. The equipment is heavy and bulky and demands deliberate planning
in order to capture a perfect image. Digital photography has quickly become the
industry standard, both in recreational and commercial applications. The
strength of black-and-white, large format photography, however, lies in the fact
that it will always be a medium of expression by artists and craftspersons to
stimulate thinking, appreciation and reaction to a fine art, photo
experience.
I am a graphic designer and illustrator
and dedicated fine artist. I currently show my watercolors and photography in
juried competitions statewide.
