Saturday afternoon the air around the circle was filled with the sweet aroma of freshly baked cakes competing for the titles of Best Presentation and Best in Taste at the annual Springs River Festival Cake Bake-Off. Sponsored again this year by Sav-A-Step on Royal Poinciana Blvd., the contest featured 16 creations to tempt the taste buds of the judges and onlookers who lined up to sample the treats once the scoring was finished. Carol Coons, owner of Cozy Corner; Dutch Shelow, an experienced pastry chef and general manager of Bryson’s; and Bill Wolar of Cheesecakes, Etc. had the delectable job of deciding the winners. Doris Sauer, Chairperson for the 2006 Cake Bake-Off, reported raising $167 for charity during the event.
