Topic: What is it like going to school in a small town?

There are stories about fictional characters that live in a small town like “Smallville”.  They spend their school years dreaming of the day they leave to find their fame and fortune in a big city.   These stories talk about small town people who are unhappy.  They either want to get away, or are too dumb to know how to.  But that is not my story.  My story is about very real characters that live in a small town inside a big city. That small town is Miami-Springs, and that story is my own.

Our small town school size is just right.  It is not too big and overcrowded like other schools in the city, and not too small and insignificant.  Going to school here is an opportunity that not too many  people have.  I love my small town school.  I have friends whom I have known since I can remember.  They are also my neighbors.  Everybody knows everyone else.  Some of my friends walk or ride their bikes to school.  Some, like myself, share a ride to school with a neighbor. We feel safe and secure, and we know our way around our beautiful town.

In our small town school, teachers and students understand how fortunate they are.  Teachers can take the time to treat each student in a personal and unique way, and students learn to respect their  teachers.  In our small town, teachers and students get to build lasting relationships.  It is true that small town school have their problems too.  They may not have the money and resources that big city school programs have.  But what they lack in size and money, they more than make up for in heart and effort. Teachers pour their love into every class project, and it shows.  I particularly treasure our small town school field trips and the many opportunities they provide to share experiences with my friends and classmates.

I love Miami-Springs.  My home is here.  My good friends are here.  I live, I play, and I go to school here, where I know every street, every corner, every park.  I know some day I will move on… and I dream of the day when I will go to a University to continue my education.  But I know that when that day comes, I will pack my bags, get ready my books, and take with me one of my most treasured  possessions: all that I am learning in my small town school.
